About Us

The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training provides workforce development, workforce security, and workforce protection to the state’s workers, employers and citizens, offering employment services, educational services and economic opportunity to both individuals and employers. DLT protects the workforce by enforcing labor laws, prevailing wage rates, and workplace health and safety standards. The department also provides temporary income support to unemployed and temporarily disabled workers.

Meet The Director

Director Scott Jensen

DLT Director Scott R. Jensen

Unanimously confirmed as the Director of the Department of Labor and Training by the State Senate on Feb. 11, 2015, Scott R. Jensen brings to Rhode Island and to the Administration of Governor Gina M. Raimondo an array of directly relevant skills and experience earned in his career in state and local government and in academia.

Scott was Deputy Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) from 2012 to 2014. At DLLR, he led the development, launch, and implementation of EARN Maryland. Standing for Employment Advancement Right Now, EARN is a cutting-edge “sector strategies” workforce and economic development initiative that helped spur Maryland to regaining all of the jobs that it had lost in the Great Recession — a year ahead of schedule.

Among his many responsibilities and assignments in his eight years of service at the Maryland DLLR, Scott personally led the State’s response in 2012 to the closing of the Sparrow Point steel plant, where 2,000 steel workers lost their jobs and Baltimore lost an iconic industry.

Previously, Scott served two four-year terms on the City Council of Easton, Maryland. In this role, he represented more than 3,000 constituents of Easton’s Second Ward, had oversight responsibility of five departments with a combined budget of $33 million, negotiated a difficult consensus between developers and community groups over two controversial projects, and helped save a local hospital.

Scott received a bachelor’s degree in history from Illinois State, a master’s degree in liberal education from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD, and was a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy at the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York, NY. Before entering public service, Scott also taught philosophy to undergraduate students at Salisbury State University in Maryland.

Board of Police Officer Relief
The Board of Police Officer Relief Per RI General Law 45-19-2, within the Department of Labor and Training there is a board of police officer's relief consisting of seven members which administers the fund for the relief of police officers.
Board of Firefighters Relief
The Board of Firefighter Relief - Per RI General Law 45-19-5, within the Department of Labor and Training there is a board of fire fighter's relief, consisting of three members, which administer the fund for the relief of fire fighters
